Hakuna Matata Koi was founded in 2020 by Melissa Watkins and her husband, Mike, and has grown from a small hobby into the largest supplier of imported Japanese koi in the state of Arizona. In 2022, Melissa obtained her koi import license and, in partnership with Matsakura Koi Export, began importing koi directly from Japan. Their sourcing focuses on both established and lesser-known breeders, with a special emphasis on Nagoshi Koi Farm in Toyama Prefecture, bringing exceptional-quality koi to the U.S. at accessible prices for both emerging enthusiasts and seasoned collectors.
Melissa and Mike are actively involved in koi education and community outreach. Since 2022, they have participated annually in the Children’s Day event at the Phoenix Japanese Friendship Garden, introducing visitors to the art and appreciation of Nishikigoi. They also support a local high school work-study program for special needs students, providing hands-on learning about koi care and small business operations.
With a background in animal science, Melissa applies her expertise to koi health and husbandry and serves as an educational resource within the local koi community. This foundation ensures that every koi from Hakuna Matata Koi is raised and maintained with the highest standards of care.
